Bearded Reedling

Commonly known as Bearded Tit

You are unlikely to see this on your garden bird feeder. It is estimated that there are 550 to 600 pairs in the U.K. They live mainly in Reed beds on the south coast, in East Anglia, in Perthshire and luckily for me, in small numbers in RSPB Leighton Moss just a couple of miles from home.
In winter they feed on Reed seeds. These are very hard and to grind them up they swallow grit. They can be most easily seen standing on the grit trays which are put up for them at the edge of the Reeds.

The best chance to see them is in the Autumn early in the morning.
