Richard Pearse Monument

I do not usually do the wide Wednesday challenge but when I saw it this morning as manmade  my thought went straight to this monument  the  Plaque on it  says this

                                            Richard William Pearce
                                                      1877-- 1953
                                       New Zealand's Pioneer Aviator
This monument commemorates the first powered flight to be made by a British Citizen in an heavier than air machine
Most evidence indicates this flight took place on the 31st March 1908 and ended on this site.

It is said that just here was a gorse fence and he landed in that. His family name still lives on here. There is a Pearce road close by and a Pearce still owns a farm there.
Shame it was such a dreary grey day which didn't help for good photography
