Reichstag - Norman Foster design

Day 2 in Berlin and a great itinerary planned for the day.
After breakfast in the apartment we got the train into central Berlin for the first thing on the agenda which was a Surprise, and it certainly was. The girls had hired us electric scooters and a Segway, for me as it’s something I’ve always wanted to do. After a quick 5 min lesson we were off on our own on the streets of Berlin for an hour sight seeing. It was brilliant, and there are hundreds of scooters in Berlin, although Paula came off hers twice, which had us all in fits of laughter, and luckily was ok.
After this we went to the Art Supermarket which is a pop up original art shop and we bought 2 lovely paintings.
Next was the Brandenburg Gate, where they are getting ready for the 30yr celebrations of the wall coming down, the Jewish Memorial which was so simple but so moving, followed by lunch in the park cafe. Next a visit to the Reichstag, where you can see down into Parliament from the enormous glass dome designed by Norman Foster. I do love good architecture and this was one of the most impressive old and modern collaborations I’ve seen. The view from the outside is great but from inside you can see and feel the pure genius of the design.
Next was a walk through Tiergarten to the Resistance Museum which details some of the 50 attempts to kill hitler. I had no idea there were so many attempts on his life from so many different groups, including within the German army, political parties and religious groups as well as civil servants and intelligence groups. It’s an amazing museum and you can’t understand how Hitler was so lucky to survive as long as he did.
After this we were in need of some stronger refreshments, so went to a very modern brew house for a paddle of different craft ales. I particularly liked My saddle, my pony and me!
After a quick change we headed out for dinner at Trattoria Portofino. All the food was amazing but the house special of tagliatelle brought to your table and put in a large Parmesan cheese, then flambéing it with grappa and shaving fresh truffle and more Parmesan on top was absolutely delicious.
Day 2 was very full but Sam’s itinerary was perfectly timed and we’re having a blast.
