Remotivation cont.....

Just down the road !

Decided to be spontaneous and take the dog for a bit of a walk, first place to cross my mind was across the road to the 5 mile bridge on the Witham, no-where to park so we ventured up the road towards Bardney when we came across this place : The Fiskerton Fen ! Forgot this place was here as I've only ventured past on work duties and never whilst we've lived in Fiskerton itself ??

This is captured from inside the bird hide, a huge construction made out to be like a medieval dwelling set in the marshland :)

Fiskerton Fen Nature Reserve lies beside the River Witham. It was created from the huge pit that was left when clay was dug out to reinforce the river banks and reduce flood risk. Now it is a peaceful wetland habitat for wildlife and a wonderful place to experience nature at close quarters all year round.

Wetlands have declined dramatically over the centuries as rivers were tamed and fens drained for farming. At Fiskerton Fen, the wetland habitat is making a comeback as the rainwater flooded pit and specially planted reeds encourage the birds and animals that once nested and bred here to return. A trail gives access to the surrounding grassland and scrub where you may catch sight of a rare marsh harrier or bittern. The wildflowers of the grassland such as field scabious, knapweed and St. John's wort, provide nectar for butterflies and a host of other insects. The scrub provides shelter and song posts for birds such as yellowhammer, corn bunting, linnet and tree sparrow.

Watch the wildlife from the close quarters of the bird hide. Built to resemble a bronze age hut, the hide reflects the site's connection with the River Witham, an important bronze age trading route and where many ancient artefacts have been found.

The reserve is managed by the Lincolnshire Wildlife Trust in partnership with the Environment Agency and the Lincolnshire Waterways Partnership.
