The Boys

On Hameldown, on Dartmoor, there is a memorial to the aircrew who died when their Hampden bomber crashed in the mist at 10.50pm on Friday, 21 March 1941.
The crew who died were
Pilot Officer Robert David Wilson
Sergeant Richard Leonard Ashburton Ellis
Sergeant Ronald Brames
Sergeant Charles John Lyon
All were twenty five and under.
They were returning to RAF Scampton from a mission to bomb the U-Boat base at Lorient. Each year for several years on Remembrance Sunday we have walked up to the memorial at 1570 feet above sea level. Here we always meet John Lowe who has researched the memorial and written a book about it.
Always a very poignant occasion and yesterday the weather was kind for the twenty two of us.

This is not the only WW2 crash site within a mile of here but it is the only one with a monument.
