granny blossoms...

...in neighbour H's garden ( she is a granny to seven!) and when these Granny Smith apples set and fatten up there will be wonderful granny apple pies.
Yummmm!

The Granny Smith cultivar originated in Australia! in 1868 when Maria Anne Smith who emigrated to Australia in 1839 with her husband Thomas. They bought a small orchard and  (one of the) legends has it French crab apples grown in Tasmania had been tossed into the garden and a new cultivar popped up below her kitchen window.
And that of course is just the start of the story.
Maria earned the title 'Granny Smith' in her later years and the cultivar took her name.

Quite the icon a Granny Smith featured on a set of US Postal Service  stamps in 2013 and the Beatles used an image of the 'Granny' as a logo for their corporation and record label Apple Labels.
And all this from a discarded apple core!
