The Broadway Bridge is a bascule bridge that spans the Willamette River. A bascule bridge (sometimes referred to as a drawbridge) is a moveable bridge with a counterweight that continuously balances the span throughout the entire upward swing in providing clearance for boat traffic. It was the first bascule bridge built in Portland and the longest in the world at the time of its completion 1913.
