Breakfasting

In a supermarket I overheard a woman say
how much she looks forward to porridge
at the start of each day.

Which brought to mind Uncle B (now retired)
who starts his day on the sofa, in his underpants,
with sweet milky tea and a couple of croissants.

That brings me to me. I like black tea
(no sugar) and weetabix or cornflakes,
plus, on most
days, a slice of toast
thinly spread with butter and marmalade

unless I’m in a hotel, where I would
choose orange juice, a pot
of tea, Rice Krispies
(ah! the snap crackle and pop of childhood)
and a full English.

Well, if it’s on offer and paid for
and you don’t have to make it yourself,
and you don’t have to do the washing up,
why not.
