Views of Edo

The Portland Art Museum is featuring an exhibit titled, Curator's Choice: Japanese Print Acquisitions of the Past Decade 2019. The above print, "One Hundred Famous Views of Edo" was created by Utagawa Hiroshige in 1857. It was one of my favorite prints in this exhibition.

The curator's comments: "By the 1850's Japanese printers had become very skilled at bokashi or "shading, which is handled magnificently in this print".
