Down Street Station

We were in London today, well away from the terrorist incident on London Bridge, thankfully. Thoughts with those affected.

Down street station is a disused station which was disused and pretty much unloved even during World War Two when it was converted into a secret secure bomb proof bunker for those who ran the railways and then later for Winston Churchill.
We were on a Hidden London tour . They  are excellent with brilliant well informed guides. After that we went for cocktails and canapés at a nearby rather smart hotel.
It was  all a very early Christmas present for LooseCanon. I think he enjoyed the day.

Photo is a section of tunnel which was made into a meeting room with a big boardroom table which the members of the Railway Executive Company sat around to ensure the running of services when stations and trains were being bombed during the war. There were kitchens , bathrooms toilets and everything needed to keep the teams of workers going for the  two or three weeks they spent down there.
Must have been a very strange experience.
