Down Street Station

You may be scratching your head to think where this station is.  It's on the Piccadilly underground line between Green Park and Hyde Park Corner.

'But there isn't a station between Green Park and Hyde Park Corner' I hear you say.  Well there was and it is still there.   It was closed down in the 1930s because it wasn't used but in World War 2 it was identified as a suitable secure site for a secret bunker from which the country's rail system was run.  Subsequently Winston Churchill used it as a secure bunker as the cabinet war rooms were not sufficiently bomb-proof.

We went on a tour organised by the London Transport Museum which Jane bought me as an early Christmas present.  It was  most interesting.  The package included a cocktail and canapés at a nearby hotel.  We were rather taken with the commissionaire (see final extra).   The other extras show the rather squalid conditions that they had to put up with for their 3 week shifts underground.

We were aware of the events unfolding on London Bridge today which fortunately didn't affect us apart from a lot of police activity.
