Art in the Waikato

As we meandered home ( and became a little lost) from Ngaruawahia to Rukuhia this morning we drove around the roundabout (still semi-rural) which features this very large and striking sculpture.
"Visit Hamilton" says...
The Awakening Lifeforce of Matariki
Seven vertical waka placed in the formation of the Kingitanga symbol of the Matariki star consellation, stand firm in the centre of a roundabout in Rototuna. Symbols on the waka tell stories of the rich hertiage and history of the area.  Embedded into the top of each waka are symbols representing tangata; the human history of the land.  And at the base are symbols representing Whenua; the natural history of the land. A cluster of wild tuna, or eel, made from aluminium, are massed together and suspensed in the centre of the work, representing the annual migration of Tonga.
Sculptor:  Dion Hitchens
Materials:   Cedar, corteen steel, aluminium and epoxy
Date:          2011
