A nice bridge

Sometimes I catch the Newcastle train from Wetheral Station, which is a few miles out of Carlisle but is easier to get to and where it is cheaper (nothing) to park. It is a lonely little station and there is really nothing else to do whilst waiting on the platform but to take photos of the rather nice bridge (which was a trifle icy this morning!).

Wetheral Station was closed in 1967 during the Beeching cuts, but reopened by British Rail in 1981. As soon as the train leaves the station on its way to Newcastle it crosses the Wetheral Viaduct over the River Eden - it is a bit unnerving looking out of the window and seeing the river way, way down below.

The only problem with getting the Wetheral train on the return from Newcastle, is that it might be the one that stops at every single little station, as it did today. It does make one realise though that more money put into these local lines and so many more people would use them.
