Uxmal

We visited two archaeological sites on our way across the Yucotan Peninsula today, the biggest of which was Uxmal.  It is a Maya site so older than some of the ones we have seen previously.  It was very impressive and I was pleased to be able to see so many of the masks.  If you look in the centre of this shot you should be able to see at least two sets of eyes, a nose and a mouth.  On the top mask, the eyes are not as clear.  There were lots of these across the two sites.  There were also lots of depictions of feathered serpents and the Rain God.  I really must find time when I get home to read up about them all properly.  It has been very hot and humid all day today.

We have a bit of a later start tomorrow which might give us a short time to look round the town of Merida where we are staying tonight.  Then we set off for Chichen Itsa and Toledo.  We won't go into Chichen Itsa until early morning on Monday before heading for Cancun airport later in the day.

The extra is one of the steepest and most impressive pyramids at Uxmal.
