SS Great Britain

A visit to Bristol to meet up with my Sister, who came up from Plymouth.  We decided to spend the day visiting the SS Great Britain, the steamship that was built in Bristol and whose hulk was brought back from the Falklands 50 years ago.  I was there to see it come home then, considerably younger!

It has been lovingly restored and now rests in the same dry dock is was built in in 1843. and was the longest steamship in the world.  Built of iron it had a screw propeller.  You can see below the waterline because it is in a dry dock with just the impression that it is in water through having about a foot of water around it.  Have a look at the website - http://www.ssgreatbritain.org/

Brunel was an amazing man and the museum that explains all his engineering feats is another reason for visiting,  You can get a water ferry from the Station - the Great Western Railway - which was another of his engineering feats - track and bridges.

Couldn't get a shot of the ship, so the first blip is looking out past the bowsprit on the left, second is the bow of the ship in the dry dock and the third is this very large head of Brunel in the museum
