St Oswald's Church, Heavenfield

(Backblipped.)

Day 10, the last one walking St Oswald's Way, from Great Whittington to Chollerford. The path heads south to join Hadrian's Wall Path. I really enjoyed revisiting this stretch of Hadrian's Wall, which we walked several years ago.

The Way officially ends at Heavenfield, where Oswald won the battle in 633 or 634 that restored Christianity to Northumberland. (I'm not a historian, and it seems more complicated than this. One of the adversaries, Cadwallon, was also Christian.) The chapel stands on the hill where Oswald is believed to have raised his battle standard.

From Heavenfield it was a short walk into Chollerford, with more Roman remains to view on the way.
