Temple dragon

Before we left Ubud I took an early morning walk. This is the view into Puri Sariswati from the hotel side. In Java the word for temple is Candi, in Bali it is Puri.

There are many dragons in this temple. In Balinese mythology the dragons live in seven layers under the sea, and when they get entwined with one another this causes earthquakes. In a linked story from Tibetan mythology the dragons have a responsibility to spin the turtle which represents the cosmos and eternity, so as to prevent stagnation.
