Coal store sorted

I'm very glad i am a female of this generation, and not a male of my grandfather's. He was a miner in Fife till he left for less dangerous work so as to care for my grandmother after their young son died. One hour raking through the accummulation of slack to extract the coal nuggets in my parents' fuel store gave only the tiniest inkling of what his life underground involved.
