In-flight entertainment

On Tuesday I was going to fly from Shetland to Aberdeen, then catch a connecting flight to London. The flight was delayed leaving Sumburgh because of fog at Aberdeen, but we eventually got underway about 1.5hr late. Freezing fog at Aberdeen was preventing all flights from landing, so we were held in a holding pattern over Fraserburgh/Peterhead/Ellon area for about 1hr. We almost diverted to Dundee, but finally the fog lifted enough for us to land (and apparently we were the only aircraft to manage a landing that evening; there were several others also queueing up).

I was late for my London connection, but it didn't matter because it hadn't left yet. In fact, there were no departures that evening at all, all cancelled because of the fog. Although it took them a while to decide that. BA couldn't provide hotel rooms; I heard one guy who found a room in Ballater and was getting a taxi there, but I decided that was stupidly far to go (40+ miles), especially given that the roads were icy and snowy. Instead managed to find a B&B in Aberdeen for the night.

I was now booked on an early morning flight today, but that was late before they got us to board (and some other flights had already been cancelled). Once we did board, we sat for a while, before finding out that our slot at London City airport had been moved back a couple of hours. As a result the flight was cancelled, and I eventually got one to Heathrow that left about noon.

Not bad once we got going, finally, about 16hrs late.
