AB Telephone

Anybody remember the A B public telephone machines or as children hoping people hadn't pressed the B button to get their unused money back? I do! Had friends at school who knew how to make free calls by tapping the bar on the cradle instead of dialling the number. Was no use to me as te only calls I would have made were international to my parents in Trinidad. These were dreadfully complicated and horrendously expensive as one needed to more or less make an appointment with the International Operator who then try to get a line set up. I suspect we only communicated half a dozen times this way in as many years.
Wanted to get Christmas parcel off to the grandchildren in Ireland as I had advent calendars for them.

Also, quite a bit of heavy honey and so for such things use the private parcel service "Hermes" who have an unbelievably good weight/size/cost price. Sadly they have always had a poor international tracking record but as a rule, one week is the time it takes.

The Hermes packet shop is in one of Ottobeuren's two petrol stations with its stripped out red telephone box where people seem to deposit parcels, presumably prepaid when the station is closed. Being our part of the world, standard to have a tractor filling up!
