Lydford Gorge

There was low mist hanging in the valley – a good excuse to stay in bed and not go out for a run.  BB did not want another picnic, so no sandwiches were made.  We hoped that the weather would improve, so drove to Lydford Gorge and descended into the deep sided gorge (the deepest gorge in the south west) for a walk along by the river, admiring the White Lady waterfall.  It was very jungle-like, and we really enjoyed the adventure and I was glad that there were handrails in places to assist us.  Even in the height of summer it was damp and slippery in places.  The boys went to the Devil’s Cauldron, but I declined that pleasure.

We ascended back out of the gorge and had a tasty lunch at the gorge café, before walking back along to our starting point – this time we were on a high level path, rather than in the depths of the gorge.

TT wanted to visit Buckland Abbey (home of Francis Drake), which wasn’t too far away, so that was our next stop.  We got there quite late in the day and had a rushed look around the house, before a wander around the grounds and gardens (extras), where I spent ages watching a dragonfly.  It was very peaceful, but probably because we were amongst the last visitors of the day.  We drove home via Plymouth.  Today is the first day I haven’t been to the beach and I am suffering withdrawal!

Here’s a blip from the depths of the gorge.
