If you can't beat them...

Chain Orchid

When we were at Beetham Nurseries for the Orchid Weekend we discovered that one of today's talks was about hardy outdoor Orchids.  Well it was too good an opportunity to miss so off we went again.

Looking for a blip I wandered round the fabulous orchid display takingage many of the shots I took yesterday.  Sadly the Hardy Orchids were of course dormant and looked in the main like empty pots.  A very interesting talk with one downside.  The gentleman runs the only hardy orchid nursery in the UK and he doesn't know how much longer he will be able to do so.  Not because of age, health or any of the things you might expect.  The reason was simply if trading with the EU becomes anything like trading outside the EU is now all his stock will rise in price by around 1/6th.  He feels his stock cannot stand the increase in price coupled with the extra paperwork etc.  Don't you just love Brexit.

The blip is of a Dendrochilum, sadly I didn't get the species name (since looked it up it is D glumaceum).  The common name of Chain Orchid refers to the way each flower, less than your little finger nail, forms a chain of flowers.  Interestingly as well they are fragrant, something I am not used to in Orchids.

Kanyl has a shot of the whole flower as an extra.
