Out and About

Grosse Île and the Irish Memorial

It was an expensive cab ride from Quebec City to Gosse Île and the Irish Memorial but it was a site I really wanted to see. Last year, we visited the Irish Famine Museum in Ireland and we learned that many victims of the famine went to Canada and had to stop at Gosse Île for triage, delousing and infectious disease control.

Nina and I thought it would be easy to get to the Island but it was quite a drive away. I think we paid nearly $100 to a taxi cab driver. It was worth it though as it was a lovely day and we learned so much.

The photo here is of a wall of names of some of the 5,000 or more people who died on the island from the ravages of starvation and disease. The wall was a beautiful tribute to them.
