Coinage

The weather hasn't been great today, but I managed to get my hair cut so I feel good. Popped in my local to meet someone for a pint and whilst waiting I caught this old metal poster for my blip today. 
I wonder what it was like back in the old coinage days and how smooth did the transaction to pence go?
