International Space Station

The ISS was on track to pass overhead tonight, in saying that its path was south of Tasmania, a good seven hundred kilometres away, but it was very visible high in the sky. This shot was taken on a large hill behind us and also present in the sky was a domestic jet coming in from New Zealand, with its distinctive strobe lights flashing as opposed to the bright reflection of the solar panels on the ISS.

Just some interesting facts, the 150 billion dollar ISS was launched in 1998 and has been added to since then. It floats in a low obit of about 370kms and travels at 7.71km/s, therefore travels around the world in 93 minutes, thats fast! Want to be blown away by human achievement? download the free app ISS Spotter, pick a clear night and as it goes over wave to the six blokes up there on it.
