Maori Carving

This one is big : perhaps 12ft tall.
The paths round here are lined with smaller examples and many houses have one at the apex of the roof.
They are to ward off evil spirits and protect those on the path, or in the houses.
It's been pointed out that in these geothermal areas it's not a good idea to step off the path.
Some of the pools look invitingly clear and still, but the water might be at 80C.
