Not Home And Dry

The rain seemed barely there that day
yet managed to drench those
bereft of brollies or lacking rainproof clothes
- with a voice that drizzled on
but had nothing worthwhile to say
it was a persistent intruder determined to stay.

There are people like that. Maybe you work
with one, or have a neighbour
who’s always ready to detain
you. Perhaps you’re
just about to put the key in the lock
and enter your home. Ah, sanctuary.

You’re desperate for somewhere solitary,
but here comes that person,
wearing you down like constant rain.
What you require is a hot drink and a real fire
but you’d settle for being soaked in silence
and never having to explain anything, ever, again.
