Falkirk Wheel- frozen in

Having visitors gets you out and about even in the depths of winter.

And our guest this weekend is a Spanish engineering student so the Falkirk Wheel was top of the agenda.

He was not disappointed. The Wheel is remarkable engineering achievement involving a boat lift that links the Forth and Clyde canal with the Union Canal.

It uses less energy than that required to boil twenty kettles to power the balanced mechanism, which lifts boats from the lower to the upper locks.

This dramatic landmark structure, built for the Millennium, is a major tourist attraction though today the Wheel was not operating because the canal was frozen.
