Ancient and modern

We made a trip to South Wootten Asda this afternoon to get a few things we can't get in our local supermarket and decided to check out the ruins of Bawdsey St James church nearby. 
Bawdsey was originally called Boweseia which was Old English for Gadfly Island as it was once part of a thriving fishing village on the estuary of the Gaywood River at a time when the site that is now Kings Lynn would have been under the sea. As the water receded the village fell into decline and the last of the tenants were kicked out and their houses pulled down to make way for sheep which were obviously more profitable. The church was left to decay.  
It was visited by Time Team back in 1999, recordings of which are apparently still on 4 on Demand and Youtube for anyone who wants to check it out.
