Stunted oak

Another drab grey day, but we took the dogs to the woods that surround a small old, long abandoned, open sandstone quarry. A place they always enjoy.

Some of these oaks are hundreds of years old, but because the soil is relatively shallow on top of sandstone, the trees have grown slowly & in fantastic twisted shapes.

I can only assume that 300 years ago, when the top of the hill was opened to get at the sandstone, there must have been larger healthier oaks that provided these offspring.

Anyway, it was nice to get some air, even if it was rather moist.
