It’s All In The Name

This is Skeggleswater Dyke. What a fabulous name! Avoiding high winds we started in Longsleddale (sled and dale both meaning valley), passing over Wadshowe bridge (howe being hill) and following a bridleway to Hollin (holly) Howe. We continued via Brunt Knott (meaning rut hill) over Dockernook Gill (docker being hollow and gill meaning ravine) down past Dockernook Wood and back to the car past Kilnstones. It was a grand exploration of the English language, on a drizzly day.
