If you can't beat them...

Red Squirrel (Sciurus vulgaris)

Our local Red Squirrel group keep saying "Red Squirrels don't live on Hazelnuts you need to provide a variety of foods".   Well we do, we use the squirrel food mix that the group themselves use.  The problem is nobody seems to have told the squirrels about the need for variety.   There is a mix of the recommended food and hazelnuts.  Guess which goes fastest?

Usually when a squirrel has been to the feeder they disappear into thick vegetation and behind the holly where they can't be seen.  Today "White Tip" (the current female) took a hazelnut and trotted along a branch in the opposite direction.   I know they often cache the nut and return for another one, so I changed lens and waited.  Sure enough she was back and obliged by going back along the branch in view.  It's nice to have a change from one sat on the feeder.   She is looking a bit disheveled because it was raining and she was a bit damp.
