A View on Trees

The sneezing and sniffling dried up today, just in time for an event I very much wanted to attend, a talk hosted by the local Ilkley Climate Action Group from Hannah Marshall of the Woodland Trust. It was titled with a question: Trees - the answer to the climate and wildlife crises?

The simple answer is they're not the whole answer but, right at this very moment, planting trees - the right types, in the right places - is one of the few practical things that we can do to help. The Woodland Trust is a very impressive charity. I was impressed with their vision as well as their pragmatism. Hannah was an excellent ambassador for them.

They have just released their Emergency Tree Plan and are urging the government to take action. If you live in the UK and are not already a member, then please consider joining - or sign the petition to call for government action.

They have an excellent website ... click here.

There was a good attendance of over a hundred people. The sad thing for me was that I think there was only one person there under forty, and possibly only a handful under fifty. Where were the younger people? It's their future that's at stake. Or perhaps they think it's my generation's responsibility to clean up the catastrophe we've been complicit in creating?
