The Monochrome Set

Andy Warren played bass in the late-70s line-up of Adam and the Ants which recorded their first album, ‘Dirk Wears White Sox’ (a turntable regular on the Dansette of my adolescence!), and early singles, ‘Young Parisians’ and ‘Zerox’. This was back when the band were a struggling art-punk proposition and nobody (except probably Adam himself) could have predicted their reconstitution a year or so later as globe-straddling poptastic sensations!

Andy had left the band in 1979 to join his childhood friend Bid (aka Ganesh Seshadri) in new wave favourites The Monochrome Set; and forty years after I bought my first Monochrome Set record (their second album, ‘Love Zombies’) I finally saw them play live tonight! It was well worth the wait!

Thanks to Andy (bass), Bid (guitar/vocals), Mike Urban (drums) and John Paul Moran (keyboards) for a very entertaining evening (I’ve added a monochrome set of pictures of them all in the Extras...).

Here’s their calling card ‘The Monochrome Set’ from 1980 www.youtube.com/watch?v=49pc_xgWQ04

And here’s ‘I Feel Fine (Really)’ from a couple of years ago www.youtube.com/watch?v=sJsuahBgWyk They’ve still absolutely got it!
