1917 - Battle of Messines

Given the attention currently being paid to the movie 1917, and its seven awards at the Baftas last night, we thought it appropriate today to blip this account of action from World War I. Lorna's father typed it up in 1932 or 1933.

Here Lorna's father is writing about the Battle of Messines,* which took place two months after the events portrayed in the movie. We find the last few words of his piece rather chilling, especially the mention of 'pre-historic monsters'.

We have included as an extra the photograph in the newspaper that inspired Lorna's father to compose his text.
