Tranzalpine Railway

Our final day we left our hire car in Greymouth and boarded the Tranzalpine train for 3 hour ride to Christchurch. The weather was a trifle wet to start with but within an hour the clouds were parting and blue sky appeared. In no way were we disappointed with the journey up to the little station at Arthur's Pass 3017 feet (a one in thirty incline). Then out into the southern Alps with grand mountains all around. Through vast river beds deep colourful gorges and the across the fertile Canterbury Plain and into Christchurch.
