Revolute Beard-moss

Another day with grey skies, a strong breeze and little time for photography.

Pete and I had an early morning baking session, making sausage rolls and cheese and sun-dried tomato scones to take to Molly's - a change from the usual cakes. We picked Chris and Lizzy up on the way, as they hadn't seen her since before Christmas. All in all it was a good visit and we've arranged to take her out for lunch sometime near Mother's Day. This will involve researching several pubs around Spalding to check out whether they have disabled access and facilities - a good excuse to get out and about at this time of year!

Later in the afternoon I had a short walk round Thorpe Wood, where there was a good display of somewhat mud-spattered primroses and a lot of flooded ground, before moving on to Longthorpe Churchyard, where I spotted a table-top tomb covered with a verdant lawn of moss. I didn't recognise the species, so brought a little piece home, and found that it keyed out very easily to Revolute Beard-moss Pseudocrossidium revolutum, a new species for me. Apparently capsules are quite rare in the UK, but they were very abundant in this particular population.
