On the cusp

A morning meeting at a quarry was followed by a walk round Baston Fen, which is still extensively flooded, and is poised on the cusp between winter and spring - the bleached stems of last years grasses and reeds contrasting with the golden twigs of spring willow and the green spear-like leaves of yellow iris protruding from the floods.

A pair of oystercatchers was feeding on the edge of the floodwater, and across the Counter Drain lapwing were displaying, a sure sign of the changing season, though there were still plenty of wintering wigeon grazing too.
