Dinner with Camilo

Camilo and I commiserated over vegetable biryani and beets cooked in coconut milk at a little restaurant called Bollywood. Watching Bernie Sanders get pushed aside by a Democratic Party run by corporate oligarchs, we feel downhearted. “Sanders is a Centrist, we have no Left, and the two-party system is a sham,” he mused softly, almost tearfully. “What we need,” he said, “is a revolution. But I’m 78 and I won’t live to see it.”

Camilo says his intention is to take a break from social media, withdraw from political activity, and redirect his energies toward theatre and relationships, but this is happening just at a time when “social distancing” is being imposed on us all. He’s a retired psychiatrist, a Buddhist, and a gifted actor who is part of the cast for Donna Hayes’ play, which we both wonder if we will actually be able to present in April. Events are cancelling left and right, and for all we know we may be on our deathbeds by April. Neither of us is afraid of that. We’ve had long, rich, interesting lives. But we would love to be around to see the people of this country wrench control from the hands of the corporatocracy.

Coincidentally, I’m also about to take a break. Sue and I are leaving Friday morning for Long Beach, Washington, where we’re going to be unplugged, without Wifi and computers, walking the beach, reading, making photographs if it isn't pouring rain, and being together without interruption or responsibility. Tomorrow we have to get packed and organized, so I’m taking a break from Blip and all electronic devices till Monday. The forecast says it will be raining and freezing cold at the coast, but we don’t care. We need to get away. I’ll back blip after we return to Portland on Monday. TTYL.
