Stoney Lane

Today's the day ......................... for a walk through town

This is Stoney Lane - a steep cobbled path in the area of Kendal known as Fellside. The houses and cottages date from the 16th century and occupy the steep slope between Kendal Fell and the river valley.

This was where the slums of Kendal were - 'The Ghetto of Kendal's Poor' where hundreds of families lived, many in unbelievably squalid and overcrowded conditions. Even now, the area is a perfect wilderness of steps, terraces and lanes, a warren-like maze of ginnels.

Of course it's all gone a lot more up-market now but there are still lots of interesting bits to explore ...............................

PS I've just noticed that two years ago I gave a link to the fantastic dance video that son Rob had made after his round the world trip. If you didn't see it two years ago - here it is again. It's still brilliant - and it only takes a minute or so!
