During the Civil War in the 1640's, Chudleigh Fort was used by Parliamentarians as an eight cannon defence against incoming Royalist attacks.
It gave a good view of the river below as it probably rained a lot less in those days. 
The old Civil War Fort was actually just a plain earthwork but, early in the nineteenth century, was rebuilt to include Castle style battlements. 
It has been dull, mizzly and drizzly all day, and I couldn't get any camera shots without a shower door impression from the lens, hence the 'phone blip instead.
