Not merely a vegetable stall

I can't think how this quote, which I didn't recognise, got to the vegetable stall in a neighbouring village, but it seems apt for our times.

The poor stall-holder (the farmer) was shouted at for his attempt to assist a rather slow customer: the farmer was getting quite close, albeit on the other side of a 5-bar gate, when his wife spotted the proximity from the kitchen door.  It was a suitable and timely warning to all of us.
