Flower Fly

This is Pyrrhopappus carolinianus, which is a real mouthful! (semi) Commonly known as 'Texas false dandelion'. The tiny insect visiting the flower is a 'Flower Fly' Toxomerus geminates, a species of the Hover Fly.
The Flower Fly looks like a miniature wasp or bee but those yellow and black stripes are only for 'show', these little buzzers don't bite or sting! The larvae stage of the Flower Fly is predatory and feeds on aphids which are destructive little 'suckers', so Flower Flies are certainly welcomed in our yard! There's Magic in Everything...if you look closely enough!
Be Well.
