Spanish Mission Garage

The King Street Motors Garage in Newtown is an exuberant example of the Spanish Mission style of architecture which became popular in Sydney mainly in the 1930s. Once the fashion took off for houses, garages followed. I've been told that this garage was still operating as a car mechanics workshop until the late 1980s.

It's really disappointing to see this building at best not being maintained and at worst falling into ruin. One of my friends tried to buy it a few years ago and wanted to turn it into a venue but the owner refuses to sell. The only reason it looks better than it did a while ago is because the council made the owner tidy it up.

This service station was used for some scenes in the mid 1980s movie Bliss, based on the Peter Carey novel.

Thanks for hosting Marlieske.
