Rule Britannia poet

Day 12- another circuit on the roads.. Ham, Richmond and back. Another blue plaque on the Royal Hospital on Kew Foot Road. Now Richmond Royal NHS hospital for mental health and rehabilitation. I was unaware of it before today!
James Thomson was born in Scotland . After the publication of some of his poems he came to London in 1725. He wrote the words to Rule Britannia which was set to music by Thomas Arne, in 1740. He spent his later years in Richmond and is buried in St Mary Magdalene Church, Richmond. His house was extended and opened as a hospital in 1868. Queen Victoria became a patron and it became the Royal Hospital in 1895.
