Delivery

I am not sure this could be classed as an essential journey, but it was only within the village and he was obviously nowhere near in contact with anyone. This is our local builder delivering Gordon some soil for his vegetable beds. The request was made a while back, but since then all the local building projects have been stopped, so Gordon thought he was going to have to manage without. Then suddenly today the digger arrived and was driven down our drive to dump soil.

This year will be the first time that Gordon will have a complete Spring to get on with growing vegetables. Usually we are away a lot in April and May and he is exam marking in June. None of these things will be happening this year, so . . .

It occurred to me as the delivery was being made that the closure of building sites was one of the reasons it was so very quiet, as I sat outside this afternoon reading in the sunshine. Although we do live in a quiet place, this was ultra quiet - no machines, no cars. Just birds - that's all. So much background noise that we just get used to and then it stops and we realise it is silent. I think we might all get used to this peace and quiet.
