Drama in the garden

Looking out of the window at 7 I saw a magpie striding towards the pond.  He went to drink, or so I thought, but pulled out one of my pesky newts (see yesterday's blip) and started to eat the wriggling beast on the lawn.  Then he flew away with it.  I filled the peanut and sunflower seed containers.  Within an hour the jay was onto the peanuts - how do they know?  He hasn't been seen this year.  Then a magpie came and knocked at the container that had dried meal worms.  Within a few minutes the robin was there to pick up the morsels.  The timid dove didn't stay long.  His/her partner wasn't around so may be sitting on eggs.  The extraordinary beast, bottom right, came out of the grass - what is it?
