Death of a friend and colleague

Tony Herbert, pictured here with his son James, and I worked together in the early 1990s. His friendliness and keen sense of justice was evidenced when he volunteered to be a witness for me at an Industrial Tribunal in 1994 where I won an awarded for wrongful dismissal which came in handy to support my start-up business. I am only one of the numerous friends Tony nurtured over decades.

The defining moment of his life was when James, who had well-known mental health issues, died in police custody at 8.30 pm on 10 June 2010. Since then, in addition to running his printing business and supporting West Ham United, Tony devoted his time to:
1. Trying to establish what actually happened to James.
2. Working to improve police training: "Six Missed Chances".
3. Supporting other families broken by deaths in police custody or after police contact.

His death at 65 is a great loss.
