Miss Havisham in Newtown

There is an apocryphal belief that Charles Dickens heard the story of Newtown’s own jilted bride and wealthy recluse, Eliza Emily Donnitorne, and took her as the model for Miss Havisham.

This mural by street artist Ox King depicts a rather louche Eliza in her bridal veil, with cats and an ibis for company. In the four years she’s been in this carpark her colours have faded a bit.

As AnnieBelle mentioned a couple of weeks ago, Eliza is buried in St Stephen’s cemetery, around the corner from here.

Thanks for hosting admirer!
