Linemen

We crossed this railway line on the way to the beach and I was wondering whether ‘linemen’ still walk the lines to check them each day.
As a young girl, I used to catch the train to school along with half a dozen other girls. Not only did we used to sit in the rope luggage racks above us, swinging our legs, we also used to stick our heads out of the windows and lose our berets.
The linemen used to walk the line each day and would return the berets to our departure station. The berets had our names in them and of course, the station master knew all our names. We got a telling off for being ‘silly cuckoos’, saying how, if we weren’t careful, we would lose our heads!!!
